The Government through the State Department for Correctional Services, has commenced preparations for this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) examinations.
Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from ‘Christ Is the Answer Ministries’ (CITAM), Principal Secretary (PS) for Correctional Services, Dr. Salome Beacco, stressed that the department has prioritized access to formal education for offenders as part of broader reforms aimed at transforming the country’s correctional system.
The PS noted that ongoing collaboration between the department and various partners has been instrumental in supporting the rehabilitation of inmates and preparing them for successful reintegration into society, thereby contributing to the reduction of recidivism.
Dr. Beacco also appreciated CITAM’s continued support for correctional officers and urged the church to develop a structured curriculum through which officers can consistently receive training in financial management, family matters, and work-life balance.
During the meeting, CITAM donated Sh100,000 towards the purchase of stationery to support candidates sitting the forthcoming national examinations.
Rev. Grace Bukachi, Team Lead, CITAM Chaplaincy, highlighted that the partnership between CITAM and the State Department for Correctional Services has recorded significant milestones, including the retooling of teachers on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
She added that a further 106 teachers are scheduled to undergo similar training in September.
CITAM has also continued to support correctional officers across various stations through spiritual and psychosocial support programmes, as well as training in financial management, family matters, and work-life balance.
