Gov't Warns Against Impersonators Targeting Tax Exemption Applicants

The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has warned members of the public against fraudsters impersonating officers from the Tax Exemption Vetting Team and demanding money to facilitate the processing of tax exemption applications.
In a statement on Monday, August 24, the council said the scammers are targeting applicants by falsely claiming they can fast-track the processing and issuance of Tax Exemption Certificates.
"It has come to our attention that fraudsters impersonating officers from the Tax Exemption Vetting Team are soliciting money from the public, claiming they can fast-track the processing and issuance of Tax Exemption Certificates," the statement read.
NCPWD noted that no officer of its Tax Exemption Vetting Team is authorized to demand or accept money, fees or bribes from applicants in exchange for processing or expediting applications.
The council further clarified that all services relating to the processing of Tax Exemption Certificates are provided free of illicit charges and strictly follow the established official procedures.

It urged applicants and members of the public not to engage with individuals who claim they can accelerate the processing of tax exemption services in exchange for payment.
"If anyone demands money or attempts to solicit a bribe from you to facilitate these services, do not comply. Immediately report the individual and details of the incident to the nearest police station or through our official anti-corruption hotline," the statement added.
This comes days after NCPWD provided an update on the development of regulations aimed at implementing provisions of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2025.
In a statement on Tuesday, August 18, the council said it has developed three sets of regulations covering the registration of persons with disabilities, adjustment orders, and income tax exemptions for persons with disabilities, their parents and guardians.
The three regulations are the Persons with Disabilities (Registration) Regulations, Persons with Disabilities (Adjustment Orders) Regulations, and Income Tax (Persons with Disabilities, Parents and Guardians' Tax Exemptions) Regulations.
NCPWD said the Registration and Adjustment Regulations have made significant progress, while consultations are still ongoing on the regulations dealing with income tax exemptions.
"The Registration and Adjustment Regulations have progressed well, while the Income Tax Regulations are still undergoing finalization through consultations with the National Treasury and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). We look forward to concluding these consultations and finalizing the draft Income Tax Regulations," the statement read.
NCPWD said the next stage after finalization will involve public participation, allowing persons with disabilities and other stakeholders to examine the proposed regulations and provide their input before they are formally concluded.
"Once the regulations have been finalized, NCPWD will proceed with public participation, providing persons with disabilities and other stakeholders with an opportunity to review the proposed regulations and give their views and recommendations before the regulations are finalized," the statement added.
