Kiprono listed 12 factors he believes are most likely to push someone into homelessness while living abroad. These include the breakdown of a marriage or relationship, alcohol or drug addiction, losing one's immigration status through expired or missing documents, and sudden job loss.

He also pointed to serious illness or injury, mounting debt, domestic violence and family conflict, as well as mental health challenges and legal or immigration complications.

Beyond those, Kiprono highlighted a lack of family support, business failure, and unexpected emergencies such as eviction, accidents or fires as circumstances that can upend even a well-established life within days.

The Gap Between Social Media and Reality

Kiprono was particularly pointed about the false picture that diaspora life often presents to those back home. He noted that many people living abroad maintain appearances through nice cars, comfortable homes, well-paying jobs and holiday photos shared online, while quietly managing fragile situations beneath the surface.

A single major crisis, he said, is often enough to pull the rug from under someone who seemed entirely stable.

He also called on people to resist the urge to judge those experiencing homelessness, noting that some individuals may have been financially secure not long before an emergency derailed everything.

His advice to Kenyans living abroad was practical and direct: save money while the opportunity exists, keep immigration documents valid and protected, invest in building a genuine support network, and resist the assumption that tomorrow will resemble today.
