Kenya Met Predicts Cold Weather in Nairobi and Kiambu Counties

The Kenya Meteorological Department has predicted cold weather in Nairobi and Kiambu Counties between Sunday, August 16 and Thursday, August 20.

In a weather forecast published on Saturday, August 15, Kenya Met stated that cool and cloudy conditions are expected in the two counties during the aforementioned period.

The general weather pattern in Nairobi will feature cloudy mornings, sunny intervals in the afternoons, and partly cloudy nights.

The temperatures will reach a maximum of between 24 and 27 degrees centigrage and will drop to as low as 9 degrees centegrade.

On the other hand, Kenya Met predicted light showers in some parts of Kiambu County on Sunday afternoon. The mornings will be cloudy with sunny intervals, while the nights will be partly cloudy.

"Intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are expected in some parts of Nairobi, Kajiado, Kiambu, Murang'a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Machakos, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Nakuru and Kajiado counties," the statement read in part.

The Weatherman predicted light rainfall in a few counties, including Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Wajir, Garissa, and Turkana.

Earlier, the Met Department said rainfall is expected in Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Kericho, Nyandarua, Nyeri and Elgeyo Marakwet counties.

The Weatherman stated that dry weather conditions will continue in most parts of the country while temperatures are expected to remain low.

Meanwhile, the Met Department reiterated its call to the national and county governments to prepare adequately ahead of the El Niño season, when most parts of the country are expected to receive heavy rainfall.

On August 12, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja announced that they had implemented several mitigation measures. He disclosed that environmental teams, including the Green Army, had been deployed across the city to tackle drainage and waterway blockages.

Sakaja added that the teams are clearing alleyways, unclogging sewer and drainage systems, and removing accumulated silt and debris from river channels.

He explained that the interventions are intended to ensure rainwater can flow freely during heavy downpours, particularly in areas that are vulnerable to flooding.
