Murang'a couple found dead hours after moving in together

A couple who moved in together on the afternoon of August 9, 2026, were both found dead the same evening, just hours after beginning their shared life in Nyerere village, Murang'a County.

Patrick Mwangi, 28, a motorcycle taxi operator, and Jackline Wambui, 25, who did occasional manual work, had been in a relationship for roughly three years before Wambui arrived at what was to be their new home at 4 pm that day.

By 7:30 pm, both were dead.

Murang'a County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo confirmed the deaths are under investigation.

Early indications suggest one partner killed the other before dying by self-harm, though Kimaiyo said officers remain open to pursuing additional leads if fresh evidence surfaces.

The bodies were transferred to Maragua Level Four Hospital mortuary.

According to Mwangi's mother, Bilha Wangare, the couple's time together was defined by intense but volatile attachment.

"It was a love that seemed almost like a spell. They shared an intense passion that was hard to fathom. I took part in many mediation meetings to help them forgive each other. I think the term that fits them best is 'foolish lovers'," she said.

Their disputes ranged from disagreements over mobile phones and finances to complaints about lifestyle choices.

Wambui felt Mwangi did not take her out for entertainment enough, while Mwangi accused her of stealing KSh 100,000 from him.

Wambui also objected to the financial support he extended to his parents, and separately demanded he transfer ownership of his motorcycle and the title deed to a 0.1-acre plot he had bought in Makuyu, Maragua.

On August 4, Wangare convened a reconciliation meeting.

Mwangi said he wanted Wambui to bear his child before they moved in together; Wambui pressed for the property documents.

They eventually settled on a compromise.

Mwangi would set up a business for her at Irembu market, and she agreed to try to conceive. After Wambui left, Mwangi quietly handed the documents to his mother, saying he did not trust her.

On August 6, Wambui phoned Wangare to say she had decided to go ahead with the move and would arrive on August 9.

Mwangi was waiting when she got there that afternoon. The two left together on his motorcycle and returned around 7 pm. Wangare later noted that Wambui looked tired, drowsy, and intoxicated on their return.

Shortly afterwards, Mwangi entered his parents' house and said his goodbyes.

He told his mother that Wambui had shared a photograph of another man on social media and sent it to him directly, reportedly telling him she would leave him for the man if he did not treat her well.

After he left, Wangare felt uneasy and went out with a torch to check on them.

She found Mwangi hanging behind the house. When neighbours entered the couple's house, Wambui was also found dead.

Wambui's aunt, Tabitha Njoki, said the family was devastated. Wambui leaves behind a five-year-old daughter.

"She told me she was moving in to get married. I did not know that the marriage would last only three hours. May God have mercy on us," Njoki said.
