Innovation often begins with a problem that demands a solution. Faced with a challenge, people read widely, consult colleagues, seek expert advice, debate ideas and sometimes spend sleepless nights wrestling with difficult questions. At other times, a breakthrough emerges during a quiet moment of reflection. Innovation is rarely accidental. It is usually the product of sustained intellectual effort.
In recent years, however, a new player has become part of that process: artificial intelligence.
The last 25 years have witnessed remarkable technological advances, but none has been adopted as rapidly as AI. In just a few years, it has transformed how we write, research, communicate and work. With a few prompts, one can produce an article, presentation, proposal or report in minutes.
People use AI differently. Some generate entire pieces of work with it, while others create their own content first and then use AI to review, refine or improve it. It is increasingly used to fact-check, improve grammar, organise ideas and identify weaknesses in arguments. Used responsibly, it is a remarkably powerful tool.
Ethical and educational challenges
There is no denying that AI has made our lives easier and more efficient. Tasks that once required days can now be completed in a fraction of the time. For businesses, where speed is a competitive advantage, the appeal is obvious. AI enables organisations to produce more with fewer resources, while also finding its way into creative industries, from production and editing to content generation.
Yet the rise of AI also raises important questions.
Beyond disrupting professions and forcing workers to acquire new skills, AI presents ethical, regulatory and educational challenges. Universities, for instance, are grappling with where legitimate assistance ends and academic dishonesty begins. At the same time, AI is increasingly capable of performing tasks that once required extensive reading, analysis and critical thinking, while tools designed to detect AI-generated content remain unreliable.
Strengthen human creativity
My greatest concern, however, extends beyond ethics or employment. It is the possibility that excessive dependence on AI may gradually weaken the habits that drive innovation itself.
Innovation requires more than answers. It requires curiosity, experimentation, persistence and the ability to grapple with difficult problems. The danger is not that AI will think for us, but that we may become less willing to engage in the hard thinking that often precedes discovery. If every challenge is met with “prompt, enter, generate,” what happens to our capacity for deep reflection? What happens when fewer people take the time to question assumptions and develop original ideas? The human brain, after all, evolved to solve problems. Like any muscle, it grows stronger through use and weaker through neglect.
Kenya cannot stop technological progress, nor should it try. The more important question is whether we will use AI to strengthen human creativity and innovation or allow it to replace the habits of thinking that make innovation possible.
