Canada's immigration authorities have set out six conditions that foreign nationals must satisfy to obtain a temporary resident visa, the official name for what is commonly called a visitor visa.
The visa covers short-term trips to Canada for purposes including tourism, visiting family or friends, and other brief activities.
What are the requirements for Canada's visitor visa?
The first condition is possession of a valid travel document. In most cases, this means a current passport, and no application can proceed without one.
Good health is the second requirement. Applicants must be in good health at the time they apply, and immigration authorities may require a formal medical examination to verify this in certain circumstances.
According to Legit, the third condition relates to criminal and immigration history. Any applicant with a conviction that renders them inadmissible under Canadian law will be disqualified. Officers also consider whether a person has previously breached immigration rules, either in Canada or in another country.
The fourth condition centres on the applicant's connection to their country of origin. Immigration officers examine whether there are genuine, compelling reasons for the person to return home after their visit ends.
Employment, property ownership, financial assets, and close family members residing abroad all serve as evidence of such ties. The stronger these connections, the more persuasive the argument that the applicant has no intention of overstaying.
Closely related to this is the fifth requirement, which calls on applicants to personally convince an immigration officer that they will leave Canada before their permitted stay expires. This assessment is made on a case-by-case basis and is among the more subjective criteria in the entire process.
The sixth and final condition is financial. Applicants must demonstrate that they possess sufficient funds to cover all expenses throughout their stay in Canada. The precise threshold considered adequate depends on the duration of the visit and whether the traveller intends to stay in paid accommodation or with a host already residing in the country.
Who is eligible for visa-free entry to Canada?
In other news, Canada released its updated 2026 entry rules, outlining which foreign nationals can travel without obtaining a standard visitor visa.
The guidelines also identify a limited number of travellers who are exempt from both a visitor visa and an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA).
Citizens of more than 50 countries remain eligible for the eTA programme when arriving by air.
