The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has licensed 25 additional Digital Credit Providers (DCPs), bringing the total number of regulated digital lenders in the country to 252.
The CBK announced the approvals on Monday, 14 July 2026, citing Section 59(2) of the Central Bank of Kenya Act as the legal basis for the licensing. The latest batch follows a previous round in April 2026, when 32 DCPs received their licences.
Scale of Digital Lending in Kenya
Since the CBK began accepting applications in March 2022, it has received more than 800 submissions. The regulator said it has worked closely with applicants throughout the review process, focusing on their business models, consumer protection frameworks, and the fitness and propriety of proposed shareholders, directors, and management.
As of May 2026, the country's licensed DCPs had collectively disbursed 8,374,102 loans valued at KSh 150.56 billion. These lenders primarily operate through digital channels, including Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) codes, and offer a range of products such as personal loans, education loans, development loans, asset financing, and business loans.
"CBK has received more than 800 applications since March 2022 and has worked closely with the applicants in reviewing their applications. The focus of the engagements with DCPs has been inter alia on business models, consumer protection and fitness and propriety of proposed shareholders, directors, and management. This is to ensure adherence to the relevant laws and importantly that the interests of customers are safeguarded. We acknowledge the efforts of the applicants and the support of other regulators and agencies in this process," CBK stated.

Remaining Applications Still Under Review
The CBK noted that other applicants remain at various stages of the licensing process, with many still awaiting submission of required documentation. The regulator urged those applicants to provide the outstanding paperwork without delay to allow their reviews to be completed.
The push to bring digital lenders under formal oversight came after widespread public complaints about unregulated DCPs, particularly their excessive interest rates, aggressive and unethical debt collection tactics, and misuse of borrowers' personal data.
Members of the public wishing to report unregulated digital credit providers can contact the CBK directly at dcps@centralbank.go.ke.
