Nairobi sets aside Sh2bn for drainage, flood mitigation ahead of El Niño

Nairobi has set aside Sh2 billion for drainage and flood-mitigation works as the city prepares for expected El Niño rains in October. The projects are at an advanced stage, with tenders already awarded.

Speaking during an inspection tour of ongoing projects to expand the city’s sewerage systems and drainage channels in various parts of Nairobi, Governor Johnson Sakaja urged residents living in high-risk areas, particularly those near rivers and water channels, to take precautions and cooperate with county officials, including by agreeing to temporarily relocate to safer areas.

The county government says it has identified 227 flood-prone hotspots across 17 sub-counties, highlighting the scale of the challenge facing a capital where flooding has repeatedly disrupted transport, businesses and neighbourhoods.

The Sh2 billion investment, targeting 19 roads identified as vulnerable to flooding, is designed to provide a long-term solution to Nairobi’s persistent flooding problem by improving the city’s drainage network.

Sakaja said the county government has also established five specialised multi-agency committees to coordinate emergency responses to incidents that may arise from the El Niño rains.
