Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has called out his own team for repeating the same errors that defined their struggles last season, after the club opened their new Premier League campaign with a 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Hull City on Saturday.

Despite dominating possession throughout the match, United offered little in return, with Bryan Mbeumo twice failing to trouble the goalkeeper.

Fernandes rips into teammates

Fernandes pointed directly to United's inability to learn from the previous campaign, highlighting poor ball distribution, a lack of pressing intensity, and once again being undone by set pieces.

"Same mistakes as we did last season, every away game we give too much of the ball to them. In the first 20 minutes, the goalkeeper was the one with the most touches. We needed to press more, be more aggressive, and then again we need to work on set-plays and not concede these type of goals. Against these types of teams, they are waiting for that moment."

The Portuguese midfielder added that United had been aware before kick-off that set pieces would be central to Hull's approach, making the concessions all the more difficult to accept.

"We knew before the game set-pieces would be a big part of their game. They played all pre-season with a back four but had a five against us for some height, for these moments. The most frustrating thing is that we lost the game."

The Red Devils will have a chance to make things right when they face another promoted team, Ipswich Town, in their next game.
