Surprises await: Supercomputer predicts 2026/27 Premier League winner
This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.
- Opta supercomputer ran 10,000 simulations of the 2026/27 Premier League season to forecast the title race, European spots and relegation
- Arsenal lead the title predictions while Manchester United's chances have risen dramatically under Michael Carrick
- All three newly promoted clubs face serious relegation danger, with Hull City carrying the highest probability of going down
Opta's supercomputer has run 10,000 simulations of the 2026/27 Premier League season, producing some intriguing predictions for the campaign ahead.
The title favourite may not be the only surprise, with several clubs facing an uncertain battle at the other end of the table.
Who will win the 2026/27 Premier League season?
Arsenal, who claimed their first league title since 2004 during the 2025/26 season, carry a 38.0% chance of winning the championship again, according to Opta's model.
The simulation credits their defensive solidity as the primary reason; the Gunners conceded just 27 goals last season, posting an expected goals against (xGA) figure of 0.74 per game, the fourth-lowest recorded in the Premier League since 2012/13.
However, Opta flags one significant concern: centre-back William Saliba's fitness.
Arsenal's win rate reportedly falls from 68.7% to 47.6% when he is absent, making his availability a key variable across the campaign.
The club failed to sign Vinícius Júnior during the transfer window, though Bruno Guimarães joined Declan Rice and Martín Zubimendi in midfield, and forward Christos Tzolis caught the eye during pre-season after arriving from Club Brugge.
Manchester City are the second-most likely title winners at 20.5%, now under Enzo Maresca following Pep Guardiola's departure.
Erling Haaland remains their primary attacking weapon, and Elliot Anderson has been brought in for KSh 19.3 billion, though Bernardo Silva's exit to Real Madrid and Rodri's to Barcelona represent notable losses.
Liverpool are placed third at 9.2% under new manager Andoni Iraola, with the model suggesting Alexander Isak, who managed just four league goals in 2025/26, and Florian Wirtz must improve significantly.
The club are also adapting to life without Mohamed Salah, who departed after nine years.
Manchester United sit fourth at 6.2%, a figure that represents a dramatic turnaround from the 0.6% probability assigned to them before last season.
Michael Carrick, beginning his first full campaign in charge, guided United to 39 points from their final 17 matches of 2025/26, the highest total in the division during that run, having returned to the club in January 2026.
United have not won the league title in 13 years.
Which clubs will be relegated in the 2026/27 Premier League season?
Opta's model suggests the three clubs promoted from the Championship face an especially difficult path to survival.
Hull City carry the highest relegation probability of any side at 38.7%, a figure shaped partly by their underlying numbers from last season; they accumulated just 53.1 expected points despite securing promotion through the play-offs.
Hull also face the fifth-toughest opening schedule based on Opta's Power Rankings.
Ipswich Town are next at 31.2%, followed by Coventry City at 27.9%. Coventry face the joint-hardest opening five-match schedule in the division.
Opta's projections suggest all three promoted clubs could be sent straight back to the second tier.
Sunderland, despite finishing seventh last season, carry a 25.9% relegation probability, with the model pointing to potential second-season syndrome.
Their open-play expected goals figure of 35.0 last season was among the lower returns in the division, and they faced the third-most shots of any club throughout the campaign.
Fulham are also considered vulnerable at 23.4% following Marco Silva's exit after four seasons. Álvaro Arbeloa has taken charge.
On Champions League qualification, assuming a top-five finish secures a place in Europe's premier club competition, Arsenal lead with an 83.0% probability of finishing in those positions, ahead of Manchester City at 69.4% and Liverpool at 48.6%.
