"Aliahidi": Mama Ngina Kenyatta told to convince Uhuru to support Ruto in 2027
This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.
- Baringo's Talai women have urged Mama Ngina Kenyatta to convince her son, Uhuru Kenyatta, to support William Ruto's 2027 re-election bid
- The women claimed Uhuru promised to support Ruto for two terms after receiving blessings from Talai elders during his presidency
- Talai leaders warned Uhuru to honour the alleged promise, as political alliances continue to shift ahead of the 2027 General Election
Baringo's Talai women have appealed to former first lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta to persuade her son, former president Uhuru Kenyatta, to support President William Ruto's re-election bid in 2027.
The women said Uhuru should honour what they described as commitments he made to Talai elders when he sought their blessings during his presidency.
They made the appeal while addressing Mama Ngina, urging her to remind Uhuru of the alleged promise he made to support Ruto for two terms.
"Today, we want to tell Mama Ngina to talk to her son, our former president, and remind him that when Ruto brought him to the Talai elders for blessings, he promised to support Ruto for his two terms," said Rose Chepkoech, patron of the Talai Women's Caucus.
Chepkoech claimed Uhuru benefited from the blessings of Talai elders during his presidential campaigns and should therefore honour the commitment he allegedly made.
"We have come to you as a mother because if your child has forgotten, we want you to remind him. Please tell him to remember the promise he made," she added.
What do Talai women want Uhuru to do?
The Talai Women's Caucus urged Uhuru to reconsider his opposition to Ruto's re-election bid as political alignments continue to take shape ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The women argued that Uhuru should honour his alleged pledge to support Ruto's presidency and allow him to complete two terms.
Geoffrey Lubuti, the deputy secretary-general of the Talai Forum, similarly called on the former president to reconsider his position and remember the blessings and promises associated with his presidency.
"Let him remember the promises and the vows he made and ensure Ruto gets his two terms. We do not want him to be followed by any curse because of failing to fulfil the promise he made," Lubuti said.
Why are Talai elders backing Ruto?
The appeal comes amid renewed political activity and shifting alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
Since leaving office in 2022, Uhuru has increasingly criticised the Ruto administration and remained a prominent figure in the opposition political landscape.
Ruto served as Uhuru's deputy president from 2013 to 2022. However, their political relationship deteriorated during Uhuru's second term, with the former president eventually backing the late former prime minister Raila Odinga against Ruto in the 2022 presidential election.
Ruto won the election by a narrow margin and assumed office in September 2022.
In March 2025, Ruto and Raila entered into a cooperation agreement that saw the former political rivals work together on several national issues. Raila died in October 2025 while receiving medical treatment in India.
