- Dr Mutiso, a clinical psychologist, was shot twice in the head while travelling in a taxi near Mbagathi Ring Road in Upper Hill
- Detectives are investigating whether earlier threats Dr Mutiso reported to Kilimani Police Station were linked to her killing
Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her son Chris Mulwa have been arraigned before a Milimani court in Nairobi in connection with the killing of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
The clinical psychologist and director at the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health was shot dead on the morning of Wednesday, July 29.
Dr Mutiso was travelling to work in a taxi when, at approximately 9 am, the vehicle reached the junction of Mbagathi Ring Road and Mawensi Road in the Upper Hill area.
Witnesses told investigators that an SUV had been stationed at the junction ahead of the cab's arrival. As the taxi drew alongside the SUV, a motorcycle carrying three men pulled close, and one of the riders fired two shots at Dr Mutiso, who was seated in the rear passenger seat.
Both the motorcycle and the SUV fled immediately after the attack. The cab driver rushed Dr Mutiso to the Kenyatta National Hospital Emergency Centre, but she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body was subsequently transferred to the KNH morgue, pending an autopsy.
Prior Threats Under Investigation
A central line of inquiry for detectives concerns threats that Dr Mutiso had formally reported to Kilimani Police Station before her death.
That station referred the matter to Satellite Police Station under the Dagoretti Division, where investigators traced the reported threats.
Homicide detectives and forensic specialists from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters are working to establish whether those recorded complaints are directly connected to her killing.
Investigators are also examining two separate incidents that had raised concerns about Dr Mutiso's safety in the months before she was killed, an alleged attack at her Mlolongo home and a separate encounter in which she said an armed man approached her vehicle while she was in traffic.
Preliminary findings suggest she may have been followed from her home on the morning of the shooting.
