This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.
- A four-person gang allegedly disguised themselves as church members to gain entry into a secured estate in Kitengela
- The suspects reportedly entered the Kitengela Police Sacco estate after telling guards they were attending a prayer meeting
- CCTV footage allegedly captured one of the suspects assaulting a security guard who tried to block the gang's getaway vehicle
A gang that allegedly disguised itself as churchgoers pulled off a brazen daylight robbery at an upmarket gated estate in Kitengela, Kajiado County, with CCTV cameras capturing the moment a security guard was reportedly attacked as the suspects tried to flee.
The incident took place on Sunday, August 16, at the Kitengela Police Sacco estate, which is regarded as one of the more secure residential communities in the area.
How Gang Gained Entry
According to guards stationed at the estate's main entrance, the ordeal began roughly two hours before violence broke out.
Two men and two women arrived at the gate and reportedly told security personnel they were members of a local church who had come to attend a prayer meeting inside the estate.
Finding nothing immediately suspicious about the group, the guards allowed all four individuals through, Nation reports.
The visitors appeared indistinguishable from any ordinary Sunday guests, and the religious cover story reportedly did not raise any red flags at the time.
Confrontation Caught on Camera
What the guards could not have known was that they had allegedly just let armed suspects walk into what was meant to be a secure compound.
At approximately 1.40 pm, as the gang attempted to make their exit, one of the suspects allegedly turned violent.
A security guard who moved in to block the group's getaway vehicle was reportedly assaulted, and the entire confrontation was recorded by the estate's surveillance cameras.
The footage has since provided a disturbing account of how swiftly an otherwise quiet Sunday afternoon deteriorated into a violent scene at the estate gates.
Security Concerns
The suspects are believed to have used the church disguise to move past the security checkpoint and execute a carefully coordinated robbery without arousing suspicion during their entry.
The incident has unsettled residents and raised serious questions about the vulnerabilities that exist even within heavily secured residential estates.
By allegedly exploiting the goodwill typically associated with religious gatherings, the gang is said to have turned an ordinary social occasion into cover for criminal activity.
For the guards, what began as a routine entry check ended with a violent confrontation and an escape attempt they were powerless to fully prevent.
Police Arrest 3 Suspects in Kisumu Robbery
The incident comes two weeks after Kisumu police arrested three suspects believed to be part of an armed gang that had been terrorising residents.
Details indicate that the gang was put on surveillance after breaking into a victim's residence using pangas, metal bars, and a toy pistol.
Detectives recovered stolen household items, several SIM cards, rolls of bhang, and a victim's national identity card from the suspects' hideouts in Rabuor.
