Four young men are now behind bars following their appearance in court over the murder of SC Villa captain David Owori, a case that has sent shockwaves through Uganda's football community.
Ahumuza David, Elvis Munguci, Ssegawa Francis and Lubega Martin, all aged between 18 and 20, stood before Makindye Chief Magistrate's Court on Friday, August 21, where they faced charges of aggravated robbery and murder.
How was David Owori killed?
Prosecutors told the court that on the evening of August 4, the four accused, acting alongside others who remain at large, descended on Owori in Kampala.
They allegedly snatched two mobile phones and a bag containing his personal effects before fatally assaulting him. The prosecution contends the attack was deliberate and premeditated.
Chief Magistrate Sarah Basemera explained that because murder and aggravated robbery are capital offences, her court lacks jurisdiction to handle the matter.
As a result, the suspects were not required to enter pleas.
The magistrate informed them of their right to apply for bail at the High Court before ordering them to remain in custody pending a mention date set for 10 September.
Daily Monitor reports that the quartet faces additional charges beyond the football captain's killing.
They are accused of attacking Congolese national Dr Jackson Ombeni, striking him with a concrete paver and walking away with an iPhone 11 Pro Max, US$90 and other items valued at over one million shillings.
Two of the four suspects face a further count of robbery involving Edrisa Mugisha, who was allegedly struck with a piece of wood before losing his Tecno phone to the accused.
Police have confirmed that investigations remain ongoing and that further arrests are anticipated as the case develops.
Owori's death has left both the SC Villa club and wider Kampala residents in mourning, with many struggling to come to terms with the violent end of a young football captain's life.
