The case of a 24-year-old Kenyan chef living in Adelaide has taken a dramatic twist after it emerged that he was murdered and did not die as a result of a road accident.
Caleb Leriano had only been in Australia since March 2025, having moved there after graduating from Kenya Utalii College.
He was working as a chef in Adelaide and was widely remembered by family, friends and members of the local Kenyan community as a warm, dedicated and hardworking young man.
What happened to Caleb Leriano?
In the early hours of March 11, 2026, emergency services responded to a single-vehicle crash in Morphett Vale, a suburb south of Adelaide.
They found Leriano critically injured inside a BMW sedan that had struck a Stobie pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the incident was initially recorded as a tragic traffic fatality.
However, that changed when forensic examinations revealed that the injuries Leriano sustained were inconsistent with those typically caused by a vehicle collision. South Australia Police's Major Crime Investigation Branch took over the case and reclassified it as a homicide investigation.
Detectives gathered extensive evidence, including CCTV footage, dashcam recordings and mobile phone data.
Their findings led them to allege that Leriano was assaulted at Sapphire Road Reserve before he reportedly managed to drive a short distance, eventually losing control of the BMW and crashing into the pole.
Who killed Chef Leriano?
Following the investigation, Alan Kiplimo, a 22-year-old Kenyan national, was arrested in Perth by Western Australia Police officers.
He was subsequently extradited to South Australia, where he was formally charged with Leriano's alleged murder. Kiplimo remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.
Police confirmed the investigation is still active as detectives have been searching for suspected weapons connected to the incident and continue to analyse digital communications, some of which reportedly require translation from Swahili.
This development comes after Leriano's body was already repatriated to Kenya, where relatives and friends gathered to give him a final farewell.
Those who knew him described a young man whose kindness and drive had left a lasting mark on everyone he encountered.
