An Administration Police officer attached to the Nairobi Museum and a member of his family have been killed following a fatal road accident at Malaba Stage near the Eldoret Shuttle terminus in Teso North Sub-County, Busia County.
The deceased have been identified as Corporal Evans Idodi Ekisa, son of retired Assistant Education Officer Erineo Ekisa, and his cousin, farmer Patrick Oriama.
A third person who was riding pillion survived with serious injuries.
What Happened at Malaba Stage
The accident occurred at approximately 8:50 pm Wednesday, August 18, as Corporal Ekisa was riding his motorcycle towards the family's rural home in Kakurikit, Teso North, with two passengers.
According to Teso North Sub-County Police Commander Charles Chepkong'a, a second motorcycle struck Ekisa's from behind, throwing all three occupants onto the road.
A long-haul trailer heading towards Uganda then ran over them with its rear tyres.
Corporal Ekisa and Oriama died at the scene.
The third passenger was rushed to a private facility for treatment, as the national health workers' strike had disrupted services at public hospitals.
Celestine Oriama, the paternal uncle of the deceased farmer, confirmed that it was Evans's motorcycle that allegedly rammed Ekisa's from behind, causing the deadly loss of control.
Investigations and Post-Mortem
Police officers responded to the scene and transported the bodies to Teso North Sub-County Hospital Kocholia Mortuary.
The motorcycle involved in the collision was impounded and detained at Malaba Police Station, where the rider had surrendered voluntarily.
Chepkong'a confirmed that investigations to establish the full circumstances of the crash are underway.
Teso North Sub-County Hospital Kocholia Medical Superintendent Dr Evans Kiplagat Sumbeiywo said Corporal Ekisa's remains were subsequently transferred on Thursday to Delight Funeral Home in Bungoma, following a report filed by the Malaba Traffic Unit.
A post-mortem examination would be scheduled to be conducted at the Bungoma facility.
