Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Shariff Nassir has gazetted the renaming of five public roads across the county, with each road assigned the name of a distinguished individual who shaped the political, social, or economic life of Mombasa.
The notice, published as Gazette Notice No. 13017 and dated August 13, 2026, was issued under Article 179 and Article 183 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, and section 36 of the County Governments Act, 2012.
Roads Named After Former Lawmakers and Civic Leaders
In Changamwe Sub-County, the Main Mikindani Artery has been renamed Ramadhan Seif Kajembe Road, honouring the late politician who served as both a councillor and Member of Parliament for Changamwe between 1997 and 2013 and also held the position of Assistant Minister for Environment and Mineral Resources.
Also in Changamwe, the Magongo-Bokole Road has been renamed Ahmed Shahame Mwidani Road, recognising the late politician recorded as the longest-serving mayor of the defunct Mombasa Municipal Council, a post he held from 1983 to 1997.
In Likoni Sub-County, the Kona Mpya to Kona Mbaya road section now bears the name Masoud Mwahima Road, in memory of the late politician who served as councillor, deputy mayor, and mayor of Mombasa between 1999 and 2002, before representing Likoni in Parliament from 2007 to 2017.
Military Commander and Philanthropist Also Honoured
The Mtongwe Naval Access Road, also in Likoni, has been renamed Major General Aboud Abdalla Rafrouf Road in recognition of the retired military officer who commanded the Kenya Navy between 1998 and 2001. He holds the honours EBS and CBS.
In Mvita Sub-County, the Hindu Temple to Haile Selassie Avenue Access Road has been renamed Hasmukh Patel Road, honouring the late founder of Mombasa Cement, who is also remembered for his philanthropic work linked to the rehabilitation of the Kibarani dumpsite.
The governor stated that the commemorative names were adopted in response to representations from residents, professional bodies, veterans' associations, and community leaders.
The renaming is intended to preserve the county's history and strengthen a sense of identity among its residents.
The gazette notice confirms that the new names are additional designations and do not alter the classification or reference numbers assigned to the respective roads under the Kenya Roads Act, 2007.
