Ndindi Nyoro Declares Ruto 'Kenya's Number One Enemy,' Vows to Unite Opposition for 2027
The Kiharu MP, a former key ally, positions himself at the forefront of a movement to unseat the President, sparking a major political realignment in Mt Kenya.
Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has launched a direct and scathing attack on President William Ruto, branding him "Kenya's number one enemy" and announcing his intention to spearhead a nationwide campaign to dislodge him from power in 2027. In his first significant public address since aligning with the Peoples' Party of Kenya (PPK), Nyoro articulated a clear vision for a united opposition, urging leaders to set aside their differences and coalesce around a single presidential candidate to challenge the incumbent.
Nyoro's bold pronouncements firmly place him within the burgeoning 'Wantam' movement, an emerging coalition of anti-Ruto forces. This move significantly elevates his political standing from a recent defector from the President's camp to a potential kingmaker or even a contender within the opposition. His strategic positioning is poised to influence the intensifying political realignments not just in the Mt Kenya region but across Kenya as various factions vie for control ahead of the crucial 2027 polls.
The significance of Nyoro's defection and subsequent declaration cannot be overstated, particularly for Kenyan politics. He was once among President Ruto's most influential allies in the Mt Kenya region, instrumental in building the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) network ahead of the 2022 elections and later serving as chairman of the powerful Parliamentary Budget Committee. Nyoro now vows to leverage the very same political machinery and extensive grassroots networks he cultivated for Ruto to campaign against him. "President Ruto, let me tell you that the way we criss-crossed the country campaigning for you and made the wheelbarrow party (UDA) popular, we will do the same and ensure that we paint another layer of colour on yellow. You will know the stuff we are made of," Nyoro stated emphatically.
Explaining his dramatic change of allegiance, Nyoro revealed a year-long period of "soul-searching," which led him to conclude that President Ruto had abandoned the core objectives of the Kenya Kwanza administration. He specifically accused the President of turning against key allies who facilitated his ascent to power, citing the removal of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other political associates as evidence of a significant shift in the administration's direction and priorities.
The Kiharu legislator has outlined an immediate priority: to forge unity among a diverse array of opposition figures. His ambitious list includes prominent names such as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, former Attorney-General Justin Muturi, former Justice Minister Martha Karua, and former Defence Minister Eugene Wamalwa. Nyoro stressed that the opposition cannot afford to repeat past divisions that have historically granted incumbent governments an electoral advantage.
He underscored the critical need for a united front, stating, "We will all walk together and liberate Kenya. If it is Ndindi Nyoro who will be the opposition flag bearer, be sure I will send Ruto home. And if it is any other of the opposition leaders, I will support him or her. By next year we will have one candidate and ensure we win by a big margin." Going further, Nyoro appealed for an early consensus on both the presidential candidate and their running mate, urging colleagues to avoid selfishness to "finish the job in round one" and ensure a decisive victory for Kenyans.
However, Nyoro's new stance has not been without controversy. Suspicion is brewing within some opposition circles that his new party, PPK, might inadvertently fragment the anti-Ruto vote, particularly in Mt Kenya. Notably, Nyandarua Senator John Methu and Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, both allies of former Deputy President Gachagua, publicly accused Nyoro of potentially serving President Ruto’s interests by introducing another political vehicle in the region. Nyoro vehemently rejected these claims, asserting that PPK would not be used to attack or undermine fellow opposition leaders. "For those who are used to hurling insults at Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka and other opposition leaders, I will take you head-on. I will not collide with anyone in the opposition or Wantam movement," he declared, also warning that those associated with such attacks would find no refuge in his party.
Ndindi Nyoro's intervention adds a formidable new voice to the political discourse in Mt Kenya, fundamentally shifting the regional conversation from whether it will continue to support Dr. Ruto to who will ultimately command its allegiance in the 2027 elections. This development carries significant implications for Kenya's broader political landscape, as reported by NTV Kenya.
