Kiambu - Key opposition leaders pursuing the formation of the United Alternative Government have formalised their alliance, signing binding agreements to rally behind one presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election.
The principals convened at Windsor Hotel in Kiambu County on Monday, August 24, 2026, executing both a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement.
The twin documents are designed to hold each leader individually and collectively accountable as the coalition moves to mount a credible challenge against President William Ruto.
What the unity pact commits the principals ahead of 2027 poll
Under the terms of the agreements, each principal pledges to remain within the coalition, take part in a transparent and agreed process for identifying a joint presidential candidate, and then actively support and campaign for whoever emerges from that process.
In a joint press statement released after the meeting, the leaders framed the move as a deliberate decision to place national interest above personal or party ambitions.
"We, the Principals of the United Alternative Government, meeting at Windsor Hotel in Kiambu County, have today taken a decisive step towards consolidating our unity and presenting the people of Kenya with a credible, democratic and transformative alternative government," the statement read.
The principals added: "After extensive and candid consultations, we have unanimously agreed to execute a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement, through which each principal commits individually and collectively to remain united, participate in a credible process of selecting our presidential candidate, and thereafter fully support and campaign for the candidate chosen to carry our common mandate into the 2027 General Election."
