Weatherman predicts rainfall across 15 counties, sunny conditions on Saturday

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued its daily forecast, painting a picture of contrasting conditions across the country as the nation heads into the weekend.

According to the update released Friday, August 14, rainfall is expected to sweep through several western and Rift Valley counties tonight into tomorrow, with Uasin Gishu, Bungoma, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Bomet, Kericho, Narok, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Vihiga, Nandi, West Pokot and Kakamega all in line for showers.

Some areas, including Trans-Nzoia, Kericho and Bungoma, could see moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, a cooler and cloudier spell is forecast for Marsabit, Murang'a, Nyeri, Nyandarua and Laikipia counties, while strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots are expected to sweep across the northern and coastal counties; Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui.

In the capital, Nairobi residents can expect a partly cloudy night giving way to cloudy skies with sunny intervals in the morning, before clearing into sunny intervals by the afternoon. Temperatures will range between a cool 13°C at night and a mild 24°C during the day; fairly typical for this time of year.

Coastal areas are set for warmer conditions, with Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale each seeing highs around 28–29°C and a chance of light showers in the morning before clearing up.

Further north, Mandera is forecast to be the hottest spot in the country, with highs of 36°C, closely followed by Turkana at the same mark.

Looking back, the department's rainfall report for the 24 hours to 9 a.m. on August 14 showed Eldoret Met station recording the heaviest rainfall at roughly 23mm, followed by Kakamega at around 17mm, with Nyahururu, Eldoret Airport and Kericho also registering notable totals.

Sunrise across the country's major cities will fall between 6:26 a.m. (Mombasa) and 6:42 a.m. (Kisumu), with sunset ranging from 6:25 pm to 6:48 pm.
