For international online payments: Safaricom adds Fuliza to M-Pesa GlobalPay
This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.
- Safaricom announced that Fuliza is now available on the M-Pesa GlobalPay Virtual Visa Card for online transactions
- The new feature allows M-Pesa users to continue making online subscription payments even when their wallet balance runs low
- Safaricom urged customers to open the M-Pesa app and enable Fuliza on GlobalPay to access the service
Safaricom has integrated its Fuliza overdraft facility into the M-Pesa GlobalPay virtual visa card, allowing users to sustain online subscription payments even when their M-Pesa wallet balance is insufficient.
The telecommunications company announced the development through a post on its official social media channels, positioning the feature as a solution for customers whose digital payments are interrupted by low account balances.
How Fuliza on GlobalPay works
The GlobalPay Virtual Visa Card is a digital card linked to M-Pesa that enables users to make online purchases on platforms that accept Visa payments.
With Fuliza now embedded into the service, customers can draw on their existing Fuliza credit limit to complete transactions when their M-Pesa balance falls short.
"With Fuliza on the M-PESA GlobalPay virtual visa card, your online subscription payments can keep going even when your wallet balance runs low," Safaricom stated in the announcement.
To access the feature, Safaricom directed customers to open the M-Pesa app and activate Fuliza on GlobalPay directly from within the application.
What the feature means for M-Pesa users
The integration specifically targets recurring digital expenses such as streaming subscriptions, where payment failures due to insufficient funds can result in service interruptions. Safaricom described the feature as designed for users who want to maintain uninterrupted access to their online services.
Fuliza, which Safaricom operates in partnership with NCBA Bank and KCB Group, is an overdraft product that has grown into one of the most widely used credit facilities in Kenya since its launch in 2019.
It allows M-Pesa users to complete transactions and send money even when their wallet balance is zero, with repayments deducted automatically when funds are loaded into the account.
The extension of Fuliza to the GlobalPay card marks a broadening of the overdraft service beyond person-to-person transfers and till payments, bringing it into the online international payments space for the first time.
How to increase Fuliza limit
In related news, Safaricom's responded to a customer questioning his zero Fuliza limit, despite his consistent M-Pesa activity.
The telecommunications company clarified that an automated credit scoring system evaluates multiple metrics beyond transaction history to determine eligibility for the overdraft service.
The telco provided a practical guidance on refreshing his loan eligibility.
