Former Parliamentary Staffer Loses All Her Savings To a Forex Scammer - Kahawatungu
Politics · The Horizon Wire

This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.

In the fast-moving world of online Forex trading, bold promises of financial freedom, automated wealth, and “lifetime mentorship” flood social media feeds daily. But behind the glossy marketing and luxury lifestyle posts lies a devastating reality for vulnerable investors.

This is the story of Loice Nyambura Wamburu, a former parliamentary staffer and mother of four, who turned to a popular online trader known as “King David” in a desperate bid to rescue her family from crushing debt – only to end up financially wiped out and plunged into deep depression.

Early this year, tragedy struck Loice’s household when her husband passed away, leaving behind a mountain of unpaid loans, mortgage obligations, and aggressive shylock debts. As creditors began seizing family assets – including their car, refrigerator, and television – and banks threatened foreclosure, Loice faced an agonizing fight to keep her four children in school and keep a roof over their heads.

Grasping for a lifeline, she stumbled upon the flashy promotions of self-proclaimed Forex guru “King David” (David Mwangi), who aggressively marketed an automated trading algorithm dubbed the “Poverty Killer Mastermind”.

Promising 24/7 hands-free profits, zero emotional mistakes, and guaranteed data-driven wins, the marketing presented the trading bot not just as a tool, but as a guaranteed escape route from financial distress.

King David, a shrewd manipulator and conniving scammer, directed Loise on what to do to join his fabulous world of gilded luxury and esteemed endowment.

Cleverly, he asked her to join his so-called ‘Free Forex Classes’ by creating a ‘Free’ MT4/5 trading account, funding the account with at least $100 (Ksh. 13,000) and directing that she inboxes him directly soon as she had completed the process.

“Poverty Killer Mastermind isn’t just another trading robot – it’s the secret to consistent, hands-free profits… Ready to turn your phone into a profit machine and trade while you sleep?” the tempting caveat read.

Overwhelmed by financial pressure, and ensnared by the tantalizing deal, Loice repeatedly reached out directly to King David, pleading for guidance and mentorship.

“King, please don’t leave me… help a sister. Poverty killer is making good profits… I’m a single mom of 4, my hubby died this year Feb. I’ve tried small jobs, I’ve tried everything. Depression is real,” she wrote to him in a trove of WhatsApp texts, eager for a response and a pullback from penury.

Touting his venture, King David repeatedly sent Loise WhatsApp messages laden with the overwhelming advantages of trading with him, claiming that ‘Poverty Killer Mastermind’ wasn’t just another trading robot: “It’s the game-changer traders worldwide are calling the secret to consistent, hands-free profits. It uses real-time market analysis, machine learning, and smart trading strategies including scalping, trend- following, and mean reversion to identify high- probability trades and execute them for you, 24/7.”

Buoyed by the sweet words, and hopeful of a breakthrough, Loise quickly directed the conversation to an earlier talk she’d had with King David, appearing to cleverly state that the trader had once touted his own bodyguard’s success in his Forex trading journey, Loise desperately begging King David to change her life, like he did that of his bodyguard.

She wrote to him: “King Sasa, si ata mii unisaidie aki am really struggling…tungeanza na your bodyguard ata mii ningekuwa mbali…. please nisaidie….”

At intermittent levels, the conversation sweetens up as King David confesses to have changed his own life – and that of his bodyguard – purely by trading.

Pleadingly, Loice again begs: “King, umesaidia a gentleman, please saidia a lady (me). Nimejiomba. You once told us you help a man, I think it was your bodyguard get out of poverty. Am sure he paid you back coz your bots is guaranteed of profits.”

The conversation appears to be one-sided, with King David cheekily avoiding explicitly delving into his bodyguard’s trading life, opting to pull the silent card, and gleefully watch Loice helplessly self-destruct.

Still unbothered by his standoffish attitude, Loise pleaded once more, writing: “King, it was a very humble humanitarian request. The way you sponsored your bodyguard, is the help I was begging for. I’ll pay back wen I start trading…. (sic)”

Unbeknownst to her, this would become a nightmarish trip into her biggest financial disillusionment.

Eager to snatch a fresh victim, King David would direct Loise to a character named ‘HFM’, describing him as a “multi-asset, regulated, licensed, global broker providing trading services & facilities to both retail & institutional”

With that, Loise was sold. And then the games began.

Despite discounting the advertised $3,000 price tag to a “special offer” of Ksh 142,000 ($1,100–$1,500 USD equivalent), there was little room for leniency.

Desperate to secure the bot and change her family’s trajectory, Loice scraped together funds, borrowed from relatives, and transferred Ksh 142,000 via M-Pesa directly to David Mwangi.

A lot started happening. Unsure of what to do, what some of the jargon meant, and how to navigate the risky labyrinth of Forex trading, words like ‘demo’, ‘leverage’ and ‘live accounts’ started cropping up.

And Loise couldn’t understand a single thing, constantly reaching out to both HFM and King David with help in cracking these intricate trading code words.

Tired of having to keep answering questions, an exasperated HFM would text Loice: “Leverage in simple terms means borrowing money or using extra funds to control a bigger position than what you actually have. If your leverage is 1:100, it means for every $1 you have, you can trade $100 worth of market value.”

Once the payment cleared, the warm sales pitches faded into abrupt delays, technical confusion, and dismissive customer service.

Loice was directed to open and fund a live account, linking her wallet to specific affiliate tracking IDs.

However, as a beginner navigating MetaTrader 4 (MT4) setup files, chart attachments, and server updates, she repeatedly asked for step-by-step guidance, user manuals, or a basic operating manual.

Instead of structured training or real-time support, she was met with unkept callback promises, ignored messages, and generic directives to join Telegram groups.

Most of her pleas would be met with a dismissive ‘Sorry, I’m busy’, ‘Call later’ or just unanswered texts as King David and his cohorts went about their day, completely ignoring her and extending no support whatsoever.

Tired and boxed into a corner, Loice texted: “King, av been asking questions since 8pm n no reply. Mbona una ignore You promised to guide me till I get but you’ve lengad all my questions. Do you have an personal assistant who can assist me on matters this? A week is gone and am still struggling to learn the basics of this BOT. Uliniwachilia bila sijaivaa. Aki it’s really frustrating! (sic)”

Realizing that she was now running into losses, Loice requested to close the accounts, and, again, started sending out frantic messages to King David, asking to be unyoked from the unfruitful financial matrimony.

Still, King David offered no practical response, only sending out automated promotion texts and Telegram links offering trading tutorials, further frustrating an already fed up Loice.

“Your so angry you don’t even listen to my questions….am new to your BOT. Hata maswali hutaki kujibu u keep telling me to go to class…. nani amekwambia nataka classes???? You’re not a good mentor. I wish I knew singenunua hii BOT yako….uko na makelele mob sana and your suppose to help a beginner!” she lamented.

Still trusting the ‘AI algorithm’ and the trader’s assurances, Loice activated the bot with her remaining capital. Within days, market volatility exposed the extreme risk profile embedded in the EA setup.

By employing sneaky tactics and devious approaches, King David orchestrated the perfect conduit – using his shadowy characters ‘Faith’ and ‘Boniface’ to keep Loice occupied, spam her messages, lead her on, pretend to help and calculatingly coax her into coughing up the amounts required, with dubious promises of helping her kick-off her dream into instant opulence.

Foolishly, she agreed to jump into the matrix, ultimately sealing her fate as King David let his collaborators execute the perfect scam – and shake Loice dry.

Watching her account bleed red, Loice sent urgent messages requesting risk controls and stop-loss intervention: “Aki inaleta losses… ama tufunge?” (It’s bringing losses… should we close?)

The response, as usual, remained crushingly cold: “Wacha bot ifanye kazi.”

After one aborted WhatsApp call, she texted him: “Am saying I started with $200, why is my balance reducing na zile zingine zote za watu balance iko constant. Almost every one trading their balance are

constant. Why did mine reduce?”

King David’s cahoots simply, and bluntly, replied: “I’m not sure about everyone else cz I don’t have access to their accounts to check (sic).”

When the trading week ended, the outcome was catastrophic: The aggressive strategy executed trades that completely wiped out her equity, leaving her account balance at zero and her capital lost.

When Loice confronted King David about the total loss and the lack of proper stop-loss setup or promised mentorship, the trader grew hostile, dismissing her repeated questions and blaming her for asking too many questions.

The human toll of the loss was immediate and severe.

Without the money she had borrowed to fund the trading endeavor, shylocks again moved in to claim remaining household possessions, leaving her family with nothing.

Brokenheartedly, she wrote to King David: “You scammed me into buying your bot, you refused to give me good mentorship despite several attempts… till I ended up with negatives. I thought your bot would help me pay off my husband’s debts. Now a shylock has swept my house clean.”

She would add: “I will NEVER EVER FORGIVE YOU for taking advantage of my vulnerable state because I lost my hubby. You led me to depression.”

Realizing that she had been scammed, and had ultimately lost all her monies in her ignorant pursuit of fortunes and a financial resurgence, Loise opted to leave it all out to God, cursing out King David with a vehemence and pain that betrayed the smoldering bitterness in her swindled soul.

In a final WhatsApp text, she resigned, writing: “God does not bless scammers. God does not bless conmen. It’s might not be a today, tomorrow, next week or next month but my God shall come through for. You continue scamming wanyonge the way u want but it shall all come back to you in one way or another. Remember those words.”

Loice Nyambura’s story is a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in unregulated Forex mentorship schemes and “guaranteed profit” trading robots.

For Loice, the journey that was supposed to ‘kill poverty’ ended up destroying her last remaining safety net – a heartbreaking testament to how predatory financial schemes exploit human grief and financial desperation.

Regulatory bodies have warned that unregulated Forex mentorship schemes and ‘guaranteed profit’, trading robots capitalize on the lure of quick financial independence, trapping retail investors in a ecosystem built on unrealistic promises and severe financial risk.

Mentorship schemes frequently operate through aggressive social media marketing and cherry-picked trade screenshots to create an illusion of constant success.

From further analysis of those addicted from forex trading, the name of Loice Nyambura keeps on coming up.

In fact, forex trading is more addictive than sport betting.

Experience from those indulging in that habit has left many homes devastated, turned those practicing into habitual beggars and borrowers, thrown many into depression and locked many children out of school.

The government regulators should focus on this unregulated sector and develop regulations to protect innocent Kenyans from the unscrupulous predators.
