- Details indicate that the woman transferred her anger to the hapless kids after a disagreement with her husband
A housemaid working at a Kampala home has described the chilling moments she experienced before discovering five children with severe stab wounds in the early hours of Thursday, August 20.
The woman told Uganda Police she was deep asleep when she was suddenly roused by an alarm and the sound of children crying desperately for help from inside the main house.
Children Found Bleeding in Their Home
She rushed over immediately, opened the door, and was confronted with a scene she could not have prepared herself for.
Several of the children had sustained serious stab injuries and were in urgent need of medical attention. Despite efforts to get them help as quickly as possible, two of the five did not survive.
Fourteen-year-old Khadija Daizy was found dead inside her own bedroom, while her younger sister, seven-year-old Hawa Dalena, succumbed to her wounds later while receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital.
Three other children, aged 13, eight and five, were rushed to hospital and survived. The attack took place at Kalungu, Bunga, in Ggaba Parish, Makindye Division, Kampala District.
Mother Named as Suspect
Uganda Police have named 43-year-old Namayo Dorothy, a Kenyan national and the biological mother of all five children, as the prime suspect.
She was found injured at the scene and is currently admitted to Mulago National Referral Hospital under police guard.
Adding another disturbing dimension to the incident, a Toyota Hiace vehicle at the premises was allegedly set alight and burnt out completely.
The Uganda Police Fire Prevention and Rescue Services attended the scene and extinguished the blaze. Investigators recovered a jerrycan believed to have contained petrol, which has been taken in as evidence.
Police are pursuing the case under charges of murder, attempted murder and arson. A team of detectives, Scene of Crime Officers and fire personnel have since examined the property and recovered several exhibits for forensic analysis.
The bodies of Khadija and Hawa were conveyed to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examinations, and statements have already been recorded from witnesses, including the person who first reported the matter.
The housemaid's account is expected to form a critical part of the investigation, given that she was among the first to reach the children after hearing their cries.
Investigators are still working to determine what transpired inside the home before she was woken, and no motive has yet been formally established. Investigations are ongoing.
