"We've checked everywhere": Concern as top brands report missing online colours
This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.
- Several major Kenyan brands, including Tecno, KCB, Jumia, and Glovo, reported the unexplained disappearance of colours from their digital identities
- The unusual activity began with Jumia before spreading to GA Insurance, Farmers Choice, Citizen Digital, KFC, and several other prominent brands
- KFC Kenya fuelled online speculation further by hinting it may have information about what is behind the coordinated colour vanishing act
A wave of coordinated mystery swept across Kenyan social media on Thursday, August 20, as major brands publicly reported the disappearance of colours from their online profiles, setting off widespread speculation about what could be behind the unusual stunt.
Jumia Kenya was among the first to raise the alarm, posting that its signature orange had gone missing.
The e-commerce platform said it had searched everywhere without success and even wondered aloud whether a search party was needed, tagging Tecno Mobile Kenya in the process.
"We’ve checked everywhere, and nothing!" Jumia said.
Brands report colour disappearance
Tecno Mobile Kenya responded with a statement of its own, saying the company had checked cameras, screens, and even restarted servers but found no explanation.
The brand confirmed that "one of the colours has officially moved," while stopping short of explaining where it had gone.
"Something is missing, and we've looked everywhere. We’ve checked the cameras. We’ve checked the screens. We’ve restarted even the servers. Still no explanation. But we can confirm one thing: One of the colours has officially moved," Tecno said.
KCB Kenya joined the chorus shortly after, announcing that an internal review had found no missing colours in the bank's vault.
The lender also directed a question at its own handle, KCBInKenya, asking whether all assets were accounted for on its side.
"After an internal review, KCB can confirm: they’re not in our vault. Has anyone checked with the delivery guys?" the lender asked.
The growing list of affected brands came to include Naivas, Glovo, GA Insurance Limited, Farmers Choice, Citizen Digital, and KFC, among several others, suggesting the activity was part of a planned campaign rather than a technical coincidence.
KFC hints at inside knowledge
KFC Kenya drew particular attention online after suggesting it may know more about the situation than the other brands, though it stopped short of offering any direct explanation.
"Niseme nisiseme?" it posted, adding "Najua mwenye ameiba colours za hawa."
