Alert: Weatherman forecasts rainfall i counties, cold spells on Sunday

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall in 27 counties on Sunday, alongside cold and cloudy conditions in parts of central Kenya, in a bulletin issued on Saturday, August 8, covering the period through Sunday, August 9.
According to the department, rain is expected in Uasin Gishu, Bungoma, Busia, Kisumu, Siaya, Narok, Kericho, Kakamega, Trans-Nzoia, Vihiga, Elgeyo Marakwet, Bomet, Nandi, West Pokot, Baringo, Nakuru, Nyamira, Kisii, Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Kilifi, Mombasa and Lamu counties.
Cool and cloudy conditions will intermittently affect Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang'a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Kitui, Makueni and Kajiado counties, the department said, with Nyandarua again expected to record the coldest temperatures in the country, dropping to a minimum of 8°C.
The department also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5m/s) over Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui counties.
Regional breakdown for Sunday
At the Coast, Mombasa will see a chance of light showers in the morning breaking into sunny intervals, with light showers returning in the afternoon; temperatures will range between 22°C and 28°C.
Kwale is expected to record showers in the morning clearing to sunny intervals, while Kilifi and Lamu will see light showers giving way to sunny spells through the day.
Nairobi will have cloudy conditions with sunny intervals in the morning, clearing to sunny intervals in the afternoon, with temperatures between 12°C and 24°C.
Central Kenya counties, including Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Embu and Kitui, will experience cloudy mornings with light rain in a few places, breaking into sunny intervals, with isolated light showers persisting into the afternoon over Nyeri, Kirinyaga and Embu.
In the Rift Valley, Nakuru, Narok, Bomet and Kericho will see sunny intervals in the morning giving way to moderate showers and thunderstorms over a few places by afternoon. Turkana will remain largely dry with sunny intervals, registering the country's highest maximum temperature at 36°C.
Western Kenya counties, among them Kakamega, Bungoma, Trans-Nzoia and Uasin Gishu, face a similar pattern, with light rain and thunderstorms clearing to sunny intervals in the morning before moderate showers and thunderstorms return over a few places in the afternoon.
Nyanza counties, including Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira, will see sunny intervals through the day, with light showers and thunderstorms expected over a few places by afternoon.
The eastern and northeastern counties of Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo and Marsabit will remain generally dry with sunny intervals; Mandera is again set to be the hottest county in the country, with a maximum of 35°C.
Rainfall recorded
The department reported rainfall totals from between Friday, August 7, and Saturday August 8, with Kericho recording the highest amount, at close to 30mm, followed by Eldoret Airport and Kitale.
Lower totals were recorded at Kisii, Mtwapa, Lamu, Malindi and Msabaha weather stations, while no rainfall was recorded at the Mombasa station.
