‘Clodigte’, ‘Senodcseoly’: Questions mount over suspected counterfeit toothpaste in Kenya

A video circulating on social media has sparked questions
over the authenticity and regulatory compliance of several personal-care
products displayed on retail shelves.
The video, shared on X by user Ivy Muthe, shows a customer
examining toothpaste and other personal-care products while raising concerns
about their authenticity.
Among the products visible in the footage are items labelled
Clodigte and Senodcseoly, alongside several toothpaste products.
The video has since generated discussion online, with
questions being raised over how imported personal-care products are inspected
and approved before reaching consumers.
However, there is currently no independent verification
that the products shown in the video are counterfeit or substandard.
The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) is responsible for
standards and conformity assessment for products entering the Kenyan market,
while the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) regulates health products and technologies
within its mandate.
The concerns are significant because toothpaste and other
products used directly on or in the body can present health risks if they are
contaminated, improperly formulated or otherwise fail to meet required safety
and quality standards.
Kenyan authorities have previously raised concerns over the
circulation of unregistered and falsified health products and urged consumers
to report products they suspect may not meet regulatory requirements.
